Star Awards 2019: Our bets for this year’s Top 10

It’s the calm before the storm as we’re days away from the annual Star Awards.

As always, the competition to make it into the coveted Top 10 Most Popular Male and Female Artistes list will be fierce, with a good mix of 40 new and familiar faces vying for their chance to stand on stage on Sunday night.

With the winners decided based on both telepoll and online voting, it could be anyone’s game. Who will be in and who will be out? Will we see the favourites dominating again or will we see surprises?

Click on to find out who we think will walk home with the trophies.

Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes

Shoo-ins: Carrie Wong, Felicia Chin, Rebecca Lim

Felicia, who’s gunning for her ninth Top 10 trophy this year, has made the list four years in a row. Should she go home victorious this Sunday, she’ll be one trophy away from becoming an All-Time Favourite Artiste, and we’re sure both she and her fans will work doubly hard for that.

Rebecca, who is up for her eighth trophy this time around, has been nominated and won seven gongs in a row since she became a contender in 2012. Likewise, Carrie has been a regular in the Top 10 since she was first nominated in 2015, and has four consecutive victories to her name.

In the safe zone: Jesseca Liu, Paige Chua, Ya Hui

After missing out on a spot last year, Jesseca has since made her return to the Top 40. She has been nominated six times since first making the list in 2006 and has won every single time, which is a pretty impressive track record if you ask us.

Paige and Ya Hui may have started out slow, but their Top 10 achievements in the past two years give us hope that they have what it takes to pull through to the end. They also have dedicated fans who will definitely be working hard to deliver their fifth and fourth trophies respectively to their favourite actresses.

However, the trio, who take a more zen approach to life, haven’t been doing as much lobbying for votes compared to their peers, which might affect their chances.

In dangerous waters: Bonnie Loo, Dawn Yeoh, Hong Ling, Jayley Woo, Kimberly Chia

Apart from Jayley, who has two trophies to her name, the other four actresses will be gunning for their first Top 10 trophy this year. This is Jayley’s fourth nomination, Bonnie and Dawn Yeoh’s third, Hong Ling’s second and Kimberly’s first.

Jayley, who didn’t make the nominees list last year, will be looking to make a comeback this year. Though Bonnie, Hong Ling and Dawn, haven’t had much luck in the Top 10 race, the trio who have been working on various projects, have seen their public recognition and fan base grow, so this could just be their year.

This being Kimberly’s first nomination – and after a long hiatus from acting, too – we were mulling over whether we should include her in this list, until we realised that the doe-eyed actress not only has her fans, but the whole of her label NoonTalk behind her this time around.

Shoo-ins: Dasmond Koh, Desmond Tan, Romeo Tan, Dennis Chew

If Dasmond clinches his 10th trophy this year, he will take the stage as an All-Time Favourite Artiste next year. Many of his fellow celeb friends, including the soon-to-be-inducted All-Time Favourite Artiste Kym Ng, are rooting for him. That’s some rock-solid support in our books.

Desmond, Romeo and Dennis have been consistently making the list. In particular, Dennis, who is up for his ninth trophy this year, will probably be working extra hard towards adding another one to his list and graduate next year.

Desmond and Romeo, who have been consistently on everybody’s radars, are also shoo-ins in our books. After all, who can resist a combination of good acting, good looks and great personalities?

In the safe zone: Lee Teng, Pornsak, Zheng Ge Ping

Ge Ping, like Felicia and Dennis, is gunning for his ninth trophy this year. The veteran has been focusing on more behind-the-scenes work this year, however, which might have dampened his public recognition as viewers see him less on screen.

In the meantime, it’s come to a point where we are no longer surprised when Pornsak makes the list, but with Lee Teng surprisingly left out of the Top 10 last year, along with the strong competition this year, it could be anyone's game.

In dangerous waters: Andie Chen, Pierre Png, Shaun Chen, Zhang Yao Dong

To us, these four gentlemen still stand a good chance of making it to the Top 10 this year because of their strong public recognition. What puts them in dangerous waters in our books is, like their female peers, are the more wait-and-see type, rather than go-getters when it comes to popularity awards.

If our crystal ball’s guesses prove to be true, Andie could go home with his first Top 10 trophy, while Pierre and Shaun will be able to add a third to their trophy cabinet. Meanwhile, Yao Dong is back in the running this time around and his fans will probably work extra hard this year to nudge him into the Top 10 after he missed out on a Top 40 spot last year.
