Popular Channel 8 police procedural series C.L.I.F. is coming back with a fifth instalment, and this time, we see fresh faces (or new characters, at least) in the frontline, and the spotlight is on the Police Coast Guard (PCG).

Last month, we tagged along for a marine safety training session at the PCG headquarters on Brani Island with some of the cast members, namely Rebecca Lim, Shane Pow, He Ying Ying, Nick Teo, and Joel Choo. The session included a tour of a patrol interdiction boat, tactical firearms training, and trying on their protective gear.

They may be the proverbial roses among the thorns, but you don’t want to mess with Rebecca’s and Ying Ying’s onscreen counterparts. The former plays Inspector Wang Man Ting, the team leader of a patrol team, while the latter’s character Sergeant Le Si Min is the best trainee of the cohort.

As such, the pressure is on for both actresses to appear as convincingly formidable as possible, while handling countless action scenes at the same time. “I felt so tired just reading the script for the first episode,” Rebecca chuckled. “But what’s more important is for everyone to look the part - we have to look and act like we’re legit coast guards.”

Although this is far from the 32-year-old’s first brush with butt-kicking law enforcement roles, C.L.I.F. 5 is a whole new ballgame for her. “In Mata Mata 2, we didn’t deal much with real weapons, it was just a lot of running around or riding a bicycle,” she recalled. “And for The Bridge, we didn’t need to look as professional as the police force because we were just detectives.”

Up-and-coming starlet Ying Ying, on the other hand, has dealt with the action genre a grand total of zero times, and admitted to not being the most confident about nailing her part. “My character is the best trainee so that alone gives me a lot of stress,” she said. “I have to be even better than Xiao Yi Shou (Nick’s character) in the show! So I’ll definitely have to work hard and try my best.”

Adding to the burden (literally) is the protective gear that they will have to wear during heavy duty missions. “We tried it yesterday and it was really heavy, and that wasn’t even the full weight!” Rebecca exclaimed. “I think there is an additional seven kilogrammes of armour plates for the vest.”

Yikes. On the bright side, we reckon everybody will be fit as heck when filming wraps. All the best, ladies!

Thanks to their stints in National Service (NS), Shane and Nick (who were in the Air Force and Navy respectively), are familiar with the basics of things like rifle-handling. The only differences, Nick noted, are the types of weapons used, as well as the shooting stance.

Shane, who plays Li Xiao Rong, a Crew Commander in Man Ting’s team, has also done his fair share of army shows, but he reported that training for them was never as intense as what he has to do for C.L.I.F. 5, or as he put it laughingly, “Not as chiong sua as Desmond Tan that kind!” Chiong sua is a Hokkien term used to describe a tough soldier, and Desmond was a Commando officer in NS.

A concern for the boys is the heavy armour they will have to wear at times. “I think our movement will be much slower because the vest is very heavy, the helmet is very heavy, everything will be very heavy!” said Shane, as Nick added that they might not be used to it.

Perhaps that is why they’ve been making regular trips to the gym to build up their stamina (and it doesn’t hurt that regular exercise might make them look better on camera as well). “As much as possible, we would want to do our own stunts, so we have to train to be ready in case we are needed to perform certain things,” Shane explained.

Could “certain things” involve some good old shirtlessness (it would be a nice chance to show off the fruits of their labour)? “We thought there would be at first, but…” Nick said, with Shane piping up, “We are coast guards, not lifeguards. This is not Baywatch! (Laughs)”

As his character Aden is a member of the elite Special Task Squadron (STS), Joel had to undergo some training sessions that were a little different from his co-stars’ (which we didn’t get to witness).

“I’ll have to experience the boat ride, learn how to master the proper movements with a gun and maybe also the hand signals, and just get myself familiar with the STS,” he shared.

Like for most of the others, everything is completely new to the 24-year-old, who served as an Air Force clerk during his NS days. “It’s very exciting,” he grinned. “Normally you only see these in movies and documentaries, so it’s a very good experience for me.”
