Admit it: we all have that one article of clothing (or several of them) that we go back to wearing time and time again no matter how many new additions are inducted into the wardrobe.

Even an A-list actress who can usually do no wrong in the fashion department (in more recent years, at least) can’t resist succumbing to this sartorial habit. We are, of course, talking about Rui En, whom we spoke to at the lensing ceremony for her upcoming Channel 8 long-form drama, Old is Gold.

“I have a lot of clothes, but there is always this one pair of denim shorts that I wear everywhere to every occasion,” she shared. Observant folks who keep up with her whereabouts on social media might know exactly which ones she’s talking about.

“My friends rag on me about [the shorts], they’re like, ‘They’re so ugly! Can we burn them? Can you buy a new pair?’” she chuckled. “But they’re the best! They’re so worn-in and super soft and comfortable.” #RelatableRuiEn strikes again.

This amusing tale of forbidden pants love came about when we asked the 38-year-old about the oldest thing she has in her closet. “[The shorts] are not that old lah, maybe only a few years, but they’re something that I always go back to,” she said, adding that she doesn’t think she’s kept anything for decades.

We think Marie Kondo would be proud.

(Continued on next slide: Which of her co-stars has a 30-year-old suit that they can still wear?)

Rui En’s Old is Gold co-stars Chen Han Wei and Chen Li Ping, on the other hand, were able to name items that are probably older than some of you reading this.

Han Wei told us that he still has a suit that he bought almost 30 years ago, although he can’t remember where he got it from as it’s not branded. “It’s still in good condition and while I’m not as lean as I used to be, I can still squeeze into it,” he said. “Maybe I’ll wear it to this year’s Star Awards?”

As for Li Ping, she recalled buying a Louis Vuitton bag from Paris around the time she first entered showbiz in 1985. Despite being over three decades old, it’s still perfectly usable (and would still draw covetous stares, we’re sure), but Liping said she doesn’t bring it out much as it’s quite heavy.

Felicia Chin also owns a garment that’s on its way to achieving vintage status. Remember the blue checkered dress she wears in the music video for Life Less Ordinary soundtrack ‘Waiting For Love’? “I got it in 2006 or something - not bad right?” she grinned.

And last but not least, we have Xu Bin, who sheepishly admitted that even though his place recently underwent some major renovation and he had to throw out a lot of old things, his wardrobe is still bursting for reasons he claims he cannot fathom. Don’t worry - we think there are others who can relate. Right?

Would you consider yourself an old soul?
Well, some people find me naggy, but I’m naggy because I care! I think that’s the oldest thing about myself.

What’s one way you’re considered old-fashioned?
I’m quite old-fashioned in the way I treat my family and friends.

What’s something old school that you miss?
I like old school games like Zero Point, Seven Up, and others with names I can’t remember. I bet many young people these days won’t even know what I’m talking about!

When’s the last time you felt old?
Whenever I play beach volleyball. These days, I can’t jump as high as before, which makes me feel old.

Are you afraid of getting old?
I accept it, but I’m afraid too, because I might get weaker and I might not be able to take care of the people around me. So I try to keep myself as fit and healthy as I can for as long as possible.

What do you hope you’ll be like when you’re old?
I wish to be a very carefree old person with nothing to worry about. Now I still have a lot of things to worry about.

Would you consider yourself an old soul?
The word “old” does not exist in my mindset. I believe you should always keep your heart young.

What’s one way you’re considered old-fashioned?
Now you have to be open-minded and learn to keep up with the times or you risk becoming stubborn, but of course, there are some traditional cultures and values that you must maintain.

What’s something old school that you miss?
The taste of old school local food, like laksa and certain Malay dishes. Now it’s very hard to find because a lot of it has been improvised.

When’s the last time you felt old?
Sometimes young people will remind me that I’m old, but I don’t acknowledge it. (Laughs)

Are you afraid of getting old?
I think no matter how old you are, you should always keep a positive attitude. I’ve seen young people who keep saying that they’re “old” and can’t do a lot of things, and I don’t think anyone needs to be like that. Plus, it might affect how you look!

What do you hope you’ll be like when you’re old?
I hope to be like my mum. She’s 90 years old but she still has a lot of joy, is always very happy and cheerful, and enjoys life. I think she has even more friends than I do! (Laughs)

Would you consider yourself an old soul?
No. I like to live in the moment, but I also think remembering old times is very important. That’s the only part of me that I can consider an old soul.

What’s one way you’re considered old-fashioned?
My mum keeps me old-fashioned. (Laughs) She’s very cute, she always buys me those matching old-fashioned pyjamas every Chinese New Year. Recently I found out it’s because my grandma used to do the same for her, so she’s been keeping that tradition going for me and my sister.

What’s something old school that you miss?
I was just thinking about this actually, while having breakfast at the wet market this morning and seeing all the hard-working hawkers and old clothing shops. I thought to myself, “How long will this last?” Because maybe in 10 to 20 years, you might not see this culture anymore, and I will miss it lah.

When’s the last time you felt old?
Whenever I see wrinkles coming out. (Laughs) And also when I film overnight scenes, I feel it man. Last time, I could work until 6am and after just a few hours of sleep, I would be raring to go again. Now, I need a whole day to recuperate!

Are you afraid of getting old?
I feel there’s no need to think about it. The more you think about it, the more you will feel like it matters, and you will just keep feeling like you’re getting older. So I just don’t think too much about it.

What do you hope you’ll be like when you’re old?
I hope to be like [Chen] Shu Cheng, who can always joke around no matter the circumstances. Whenever he’s around, there’s always joy and it won’t be awkward. I like that about him.

Would you consider yourself an old soul?
Not at all. A lot of colleagues think I’m very simple - in a good way! But I don’t think I should be saying this about myself. Ask people like Carrie [Wong] and Ian [Fang]. (Laughs)

What’s one way you’re considered old-fashioned?
I believe you should spend every Chinese New Year with family. I’m not the kind who would deliberately plan trips overseas, unless I’m going overseas with my family.

What’s something old school that you miss?
Whenever I see young children who are addicted to phones, I think back to what I did when I was their age: I would make my own toys, climb trees, and catch fish and cicadas, but kids these days catch Pokemon instead!

When’s the last time you felt old?
A few days ago. My wife and I were doing our own skincare routines at home, and she suddenly asked me, “Do you feel like we’re getting old?” I told her, “We have a child already, and you still don’t want to admit that we’re getting old?” (Laughs)

Are you afraid of getting old?
Growing old is inevitable but I do wish I could grow old slower, especially after I became a dad. Last time, I could party for three days and three nights and still feel fine, but now I’m definitely not as energetic, and I want to have enough energy to play with my son as he grows up.

What do you hope you’ll be like when you’re old?
I admire my seniors in Old is Gold, like [Chen] Shu Cheng: he can do whatever he wants, film whatever he wants, hang out with friends, open some businesses, all while his family is doing well. It’s a very fulfilling life.
