Old-timers take over the SA2019 Top 20

This year’s line-up of the Star Awards Top 20 Most Popular Male and Female Artistes boasts a larger-than-usual number of veteran stars, some of whom have finally taken home a trophy after numerous nominations.

Carrie Wong

Total number of Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste awards: 5

It’s no surprise to see Carrie in the Top 10 again this year, as she’s gone home victorious all five times that she’s been nominated.

“Unknowingly, I’ve come to the halfway mark of my Top 10 journey. Thank you for the encouragement and the love that you’ve shown to me. I’m thankful to the company for giving me so many opportunities, thankful to my fans and thankful to the audience. I truly treasure this award and I’m grateful to my parents and everyone who loves me. I will continue working harder to be a good actress.”

Chen Xiu Huan

Total number of Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste awards: 2

The last time Xiu Huan brought home a Top 10 trophy at the inaugural Star Awards in 1994, her daughters weren’t even born yet. Last night, all three of them joined her at the ceremony and got to witness her picking up her second crown in this category. “I never expected to get in because I haven't been active in showbiz for over 20 years!” she said.

Her girls Shanisse, Shalynn, and Shavinne then took the opportunity to thank their mother for giving up her career to take care of them, and to let her know that now they’re all grown up, she can continue chasing her dreams. We don’t blame Xiu Huan one bit for looking like she was gonna tear up after hearing their touching messages.

Felicia is now the closest artiste to the All-Time Favourite finishing line, but she’d rather not think too much about it for the time being. “I’ll worry about it next year!” she chirped. “I’m still reeling from surprise (from my ninth win since) I didn’t expect to get it. I’m genuinely very surprised and touched to have this opportunity to hold this trophy.”

Total number of Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste awards: 7

For some reason, Jesseca was feeling especially nervous about getting into the Top 10 this year. “I think the older you get, the less courageous you become!” she chuckled. Tragically, poor mobile reception meant that she could not receive any text messages of encouragement from her husband Jeremy Chan, who did not attend this year’s ceremony.

Now that the whole affair is done with, the actress told us that she was looking forward to having a good meal. “I haven’t been eating much in order to fit into this dress,” she shared. The lengths people go to in order to look good...

Total number of Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste awards: 2

The last time Lina won a Top 10 award was in 1996. As the final name to be called last night, the actress admitted that she didn’t have high hopes to go home victorious.

“After my name was announced, what touched me the most was that my colleagues were hugging me,” she shared. “I really appreciate that more than the trophy itself. It’s not that I don’t like my Top 10 award, but the moment that I received those congratulations from my colleagues shows that they acknowledge the effort that I’ve put in for the past 20 years. I’ve been doing minor supporting roles but I’ve been doing my best even if it’s an insignificant role. It’s still significant to me because I put in a lot of effort and I make sure that I progress in every role that I take on.”

Despite the thrill from winning the award, life will still go on as per usual the next morning as she chuckled that she will return to being a full-time mother-slash-housewife in the morning.

This is the third consecutive Top 10 gong Paige has received. During her acceptance speech, she said, “I want to thank everyone. It’s because of all of you that I understand the good and the bad in life, and it’s you who has helped me to improve as an actor and to deliver an even better performance every time.”

When Ling Ling visited her mother’s house a few weeks ago, she took the opportunity to take a photo with the Top 10 trophies that she had collected over the years.

“The first time I won the Top 5 award, it was in 1994 and I received it from Chow Yun Fat, which is why it was extra special to me,” she explained. “I’m surprised and happy, especially since I didn’t think I stood a high chance of winning tonight.”

As for how she’ll be celebrating her win today, she chuckled that the first thing on her mind is food.

“I wanted to lose weight so I stopped eating carbohydrates after 5pm for a few weeks. I also worked out for quite a bit, so I was really tempted when I smelled food just now. I kept telling myself that I shouldn’t eat yet, but now I can eat without any worries!” she beamed.

Becks revealed that while she wasn’t nervous at the start of the event, that all changed during the commercial break right before the Top 10 was to be announced. “Christopher Lee turned to me and said, ‘If you don’t win, I’m never attending the Star Awards ever again! (Laughs) That was a light-hearted but also stressful moment for me.”

With eight Top 10 trophies now in the bag, the actress is yet another step closer to achieving All-Time Favourite Artiste status - but she told us that “a little part of (her) doesn’t really want to graduate”. “Graduating puts you in a place where it’s like you’ve done and experienced everything, but I still haven’t - I feel like I still have a lot of room to learn and grow,” she explained.

“I’m feeling very ho seh (happy) now,” Ya Hui grinned, drawing from the title of her dialect drama Ho Seh Boh, or How Are You?. She then expressed her gratitude towards a beauty treatment centre, for which she serves as their celebrity ambassador, for the increased TV exposure over the past year, as she didn't have many productions on air. “I thought I had a 50-50 chance of winning - it’s very unpredictable,” she mused.

When Hui Fang’s name was called as one of the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes winners, she did not even hear it. “One moment, I was preparing to unwrap and eat a piece of candy, and the next, I was being pushed to go on stage!” she recalled. “I completely did not expect to get in.”

At long last, after 18 fruitless nominations, the well-loved veteran and newly minted Best Supporting Actor’s 19th nod blossomed into a joyous win.

“When I heard my name being called for the Top 10, I was like, huh?! I totally did not expect it,” he said. “I’ve gotten used to not hearing my name being called for so many years, but tonight, the impossible happened.”

His “celebration” plan is simple: go home and get a good night’s sleep. “I’m not in the habit of eating supper anyway,” he laughed.

Total number of Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste awards: 10

Officially graduating this time around is Dasmond, who has ended his 19-year wait for the All-Time Favourite award.

“My love story with the Top 10 started in 2000 when I received my first trophy. I’ve finally collected all 10 trophies and I’m thankful for reaching this small milestone,” he shared during his interview at the media wall.

“Did you really have to put my name so late in the list? I was honestly a little nervous,” he admitted during his acceptance speech. “I think that I’ve received a lot in the first half of my life, and I hope that, together with my NoonTalk colleagues, I’ll be able to do my part to give back to our local entertainment scene during the second half of my life.”

Dennis let out a sigh of relief as his name was called out, and is officially one trophy away from the coveted All-Time Favourite award.

“I was really nervous while I was waiting, and I’m not sure if it's because I’m getting on in years,” he said. “It’s not easy being a celebrity and I feel like I’m becoming less brave over the years. I want to thank the friends who have been with me throughout this entire journey.”

Coming in victorious three years in a row, Desmond looked extremely happy to have hugged Cecilia Cheung while collecting his trophy.

“Time passes really quickly and I’ve been in showbiz for 12 years now. There are so many people I have to thank. I want to thank my parents, my family, my friends and my brothers. To the audience who loves me and my fans (...) without the company, there wouldn’t be the me that I am today,” he declared.

The Crazy Rich Asians star described his feeling of Top 10 triumph as being “on top of the world”, which was bolstered by the sight of his fellow actors being very supportive of each other during the live show.

But before that, he admitted to being “terribly nervous” (in fact, he was trying to look for a word for “worse than nervous”). “My hands were clammy and cold, but right now I feel fine,” he smiled. As for celebration plans, he shared that he just want to “keep calm and drive home safely”, and when everything has settled down, he’s going to head to his parents’ place and share the award with them. Aww

Pornsak, who is two trophies shy of an All-Time Favourite award, apologised for his absence at last year’s ceremony as he explained that he had urgent business back home to attend to.

“I think someone up there loves me very much because whenever I run into trouble, there’s always an angel who comes to my rescue,” he said during his acceptance speech. “Most importantly, I want to thank the best domestic helper Gigi, who took such good care of us. Thank you!”

Romeo Tan

Romeo Tan

Total number of Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste awards: 5

Ever-popular Romeo, who was inundated with selfie requests ever since getting off the stage (according to him), told us that he was “quite tired” but also “very happy”. “There are a lot of veterans in the Top 10 race this year so the chances of getting in were not very easy, because you never know what’s going to happen,” he said.

That said, he had faith that the amount and quality of projects he took on over the past year would give him at least a 60-40 chance of making the cut. “I received a lot of compliment for my role in How Are You? so I believe that many aunties and uncles asked their children to vote for me,” he laughed.

Sadly, there is no time to celebrate as he only has a day to settle various errands in Singapore before flying off to Taiwan to continue filming for All is Well. Jiayou!

Shaun may only have found out that he was part of the Top 10 during the show, but he was already a winner of a different sort before he even left home.

“My wife told me that regardless of whether I win or not, we should have supper together at home after the show,” he let on with a blissful smile. “This is the sweetest thing that she could have said to me.”

Going up on stage was also extra meaningful because his parents were in the audience to watch him accept the award.

“My kids should be asleep by now so I’ll probably go out with my wife and my sister for a meal,” he shrugged. “Nothing too exciting because I have to go back to work soon!”

After 15 nominations, it was finally Zhu Hou Ren’s time to shine as many of his peers escorted him on stage to receive his first Top 10 award.

He chuckled that he’ll leave the nine other trophies for his son, Joel Choo, to collect.

Afterwards, at the media wall, he added, “I’m really curious to find out who was it who called the telepoll hotlines or voted for me. If you did that and you run into me on the streets, please let me know and I’ll thank you personally.”
