When Kym Ng found out that she would be interviewing Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for an hour-long Channel 8 special called #PMonline (which airs at 9pm tonight, April 28), her first reaction was one of happiness… which eventually made way for anxiousness.

“No other variety host had interviewed PM Lee before, and I honestly had no confidence that I could do it, so I was quite scared,” she admitted to us with a chuckle.

Thankfully, the newly crowned All-Time Favourite Artiste’s fears were put to rest as soon as she met him at their very first meeting to discuss their interview agenda, which happened before the actual shoot. “PM Lee gave me a very reassuring feeling and I learned that he is actually very calm -- not at all the stern person I’d imagined him to be!” she shared. “After speaking to him, I felt much more at ease.”

The chill vibe continued on the day of the interview itself (well, other than a standard security check, which Kym reported “was not uncomfortable”). In fact, the actress-host quipped that she and her co-host, Channel 8 news presenter Evelyn Lam, were so relaxed that they sometimes forgot that they were interviewing the Prime Minister of Singapore.

“For one scene, we had to be filmed walking alongside PM Lee as we brought him to the interview location,” she recalled. “During rehearsals, I was told not to walk too fast, but when we were filming with him, he walked so fast because his legs are so long, and I couldn’t keep up! I said to him, ‘Please show down -- my legs are too short!’ And he turned around and laughed.”

“He was very down-to-earth, friendly, approachable, and cooperative, which made me see him in a brand new light,” she continued, adding that while she had briefly exchanged pleasantries with PM Lee at events in the past, this was officially her first time having such lengthy interactions with him.

In #PMonline, which is the first collaboration between Mediacorp’s Chinese News and Variety Programme teams, Kym and Evelyn get PM Lee to share his thoughts on a myriad of current topics in an entertaining yet informative way -- just like most of his social media posts.

“I try to refrain from posting about too many serious issues in case people find them too heavy, so instead, I try to find a more light-hearted angle to communicate these matters in a different way, so that they will be easier to understand and relate to,” PM Lee explained in a segment of the show.

A good example is his famous #jalanjalan hashtag (which also happens to be his favourite one), which he generally uses to document his various little adventures while also informing his followers about the latest events, happenings, and affairs.

“I like his #jalanjalan posts the most,” shared Kym. “I love the photos that he took at the Singapore Zoo, especially the one with a giraffe in front, and lots of tourists at the back.”

She went on to praise his shutterbug skills. “I think he’s a great photographer, better than a lot of other people. He knows how to compose his shots really well, and I think he’d make a really good professional photographer.”

It sounds like PM Lee would make a great host too, judging from another of Kym’s anecdotes. “At the end of the interview, we asked him to record a liner to trail for the show,” she said. “Usually for us hosts, we would typically need to take a five-minute break to go over what we want to say, but to my surprise, when he was told he needed to film a liner, he immediately went, ‘Okay, let’s do it’, and nailed it in one take. It was amazing. I was in awe of his professionalism.”
