It was one long, long night, but that did not stop the 25,000-strong crowd at MediaCorp’s sold-out CELEBRATE SG50 New Year countdown show from screaming their lungs out when top K-pop outfit BIGBANG took to the stage at The Float @ Marina Bay at 12.30am.

After five hours of performances from other local and regional artists, G-Dragon, Taeyang, T.O.P, Daesung and Seungri brought the outdoor extravaganza to a climax with 11 of their songs, including classics ‘Haru Haru’ and ‘Fantastic Baby’ and the recently released ‘Good Boy’, the smash hit duet between G-Dragon and Taeyang.

Not only was this their very first concert of 2015, it also marks one of Seungri’s first times back on stage since his headline-making accident and hospitalisation in September. However, the maknae (youngest member) did not make any mention of the incident during the band’s hour-long segment, choosing to focus on being his usual rowdy, hyped-up self, just as he was the last time he was here in March for the Thinking of You fan meeting. In fact, all five members seemed to be in a fabulous, energetic mood, which added to the already electrifying atmosphere.

Leader G-Dragon took this chance to let VIP (BIGBANG’s fandom) in on some exciting updates. “We have a lot of big plans for this year, like a new album or a new tour,” he revealed to ecstatic cheers. “We have a lot of new music and performances coming up so please continue to support us, and we’ll see you again very soon.”

And that “very soon” would be on February 8, at least for Taeyang, who is bringing his first ever solo tour to Singapore. “Do you guys know? I’ll be back really soon and I can’t wait to see you again,” he cooed. His concert will be held at Singapore Expo Hall 3, and tickets are now available on SISTIC.

Catch the repeat telecast of Celebrate SG50 at 1.30pm today, January 1, on Channel 5.

BIGBANG wasn’t the only ones fan girls went crazy for – Aloysius Pang, Xu Bin, Romeo Tan, Ian Fang, Zhang Zhen Huan, Desmond Tan, Jeffrey Xu and Shane Pow also drew a raucous reaction when they took to the stage for a medley of beloved 90s hits. After all, who better to take on some of the Backstreet Boys’ and Boyzone’s top tracks than Caldecott Hill’s very own boyband a.k.a. the 8 Dukes?

Just as boisterously received was the nation’s Queen of Mandopop Stefanie Sun, looking like a very chic cross between a fairy pixie and a rock goddess, who revved up the crowd with three of her own hits plus Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’.

Another treasured local songbird who commanded the spotlight (in fact, she did it twice) was Kit Chan. After crooning ‘Heartache’ (Xin Tong) in an elegant pantsuit and pearls a little earlier in the evening, she returned five minutes before the stroke of midnight – and a spectacular eight-minute fireworks display – in fiery red to perform ‘Home’ with composer Dick Lee. The crowd was shown singing along fondly to the widely adored National Day Parade 1998 theme song.

The seven-hour extravaganza began at precisely 9.30pm with an energetic performance of mainly retro hits by Tabitha Nauser, Vanessa Fernandez, Shigga Shay, Trick, THELIONCITYBOY and Tay Kewei, all decked in white and glittering silver.

Kicking off a series of performances that showcased the best of local pop culture over the past 50 years, Julie Tan and Fauzie Laily transported audiences back to the 60s with homages to local legend Rita Chao and Malaysian multi-hyphenate P. Ramlee respectively, before rounding up their stage with Chubby Checker’s ‘Let’s Twist Again’.

The 60s throwback continued with The Pinholes and Vernon Cornelius, who serenaded the crowd with Cliff Richard’s ‘The Young Ones’ and The Quests’ ‘Shanty’, a song that topped local charts when it was released in 1964.
