A heart-to-heart with Joanne Peh, Elvin Ng

Elvin says Joanne is like his “ideal wife” and likens deleting negative comments to…cleaning up dog poop

A heart-to-heart with Joanne Peh, Elvin Ng

Fans of the Joanne Peh and Elvin Ng pairing (Jovin? Elanne? Is there actually a name or are we making a total fool of ourselves now?) have reason to rejoice, as the actors will be embarking on their highly anticipated fourth collaboration as an onscreen couple after 2013’s The Journey: A Voyage, 2007’s Happily Ever After and 2005’s A Life of Hope.

In their next Channel 8 drama Heart to Heart, which premieres on Christmas Eve this year, the actors play two long-lost childhood friends who, after the classic drama-land bout of friction before falling in love, team up to restore an old Chinatown teahouse to its former glory.

At yesterday’s lensing ceremony, they shared that they will be taking on dim sum-making lessons to prepare for their roles. Both Elvin and Joanne also posted photos of themselves donning aprons and chef hats from last week’s imaging session, complete with dough-kneading movements. We suspect this series will be giving us severe, sudden cravings for siew mai and char siew bao when it airs.

But yes, our gluttonous tendencies aside, one thing Joanne told us she hopes to get out of Heart to Heart (other than some wicked Cantonese cuisine-creating skills) is a happy ending with Elvin this time, as – mild spoiler alert – they didn’t exactly ride off into the sunset in The Journey: A Voyage.

Or will she be ending up with Elvin? As it turns out, Joanne’s character will be involved in a love triangle with him and Zhang Yao Dong. But when Elvin tried to probe her on whether she prefers him or Yao Dong, she skilfully changed the subject.

Elvin, on the other hand, poured out praise like honey for his leading lady. “Although she is now married with two kids, she has maintained her physique very well,” he gushed. “She’s also very feminine and intelligent – if I can say this, she matches the criteria of my dream wife!” Woah, slow down there, Prince Charming, Qi Yu Wu could be reading this.

Our interview with the duo was also a chance for them to have a brief trot down memory lane. Elvin recalled that when he was filming his very first drama A Life of Hope with her, he kept unintentionally spitting saliva all over her thanks to the lingual braces he wore back then.

“But she still helped me a lot,” he said. “I also had my very first kissing scene with her, and she told me, ‘Don’t be afraid, I will take care of you.’ I will always remember that.”

Both Joanne and Elvin have come a long way since then, even “graduating” from the annual Star Awards race into the All-Time Favourite ranks together last year. But, as what is unfortunately part and parcel of life as a public figure, they’ve been no stranger to controversy and criticism.

Elvin likens negative comments to dog crap

Over the years and even up until quite recently, Joanne and Elvin have been the unfortunate targets of unflattering news reports and scathing remarks on social media. So what’s their advice to each other on how to deal with these pitfalls of fame?

“I have a different response to the media and netizens: I understand that most entertainment reporters are just trying to do their job and aren’t purposely taking aim at you,” she mused. “Of course, it’s natural to not be happy about certain things that are written about you, but in this day and age, news comes and goes very quickly, so you don’t have to pay attention to it.”

And her reaction to online haters is just as simple: ignore them or delete their comments. “There’s no use fighting against them because no matter what, you can’t change their mind,” she said. “Sometimes if it sounds like serious feedback then maybe you can have a decent conversation, but most of the time it’s not, so I don’t take it too seriously.”

Elvin then rather poetically likened this act of not giving a darn to, uh, cleaning up crap. “If a dog poops on your front door, then you’d just clear it, right? But if the poop happens to be on a bed of flowers, then it’ll make good fertiliser! (laughs)” Well, that’s one way to look at it.

He then summed it up more succinctly in a way that sounded very familiar to us: “This one percent [of naysayers] may be louder than [the other 99 percent] who quietly love and support us, but at the end of the day, we have a bigger responsibility towards [that 99 percent].”

Now that sounded like it came from the heart.

Heart to Heart premieres on December 24, 9pm on Channel 8.

Elvin doesn’t want Joanne’s daughter to call him uncle

Elvin said that, like most of the rest of us, he has only seen the back of Joanne’s two kids’ heads, as the protective mama shies away from revealing their faces on social media. However, that could soon change when she starts bringing them to the set of Heart to Heart like what she did when filming Say Cheese.

“[My daughter] called Romeo [Tan] gor gor (big brother), and I told her it’s supposed to be uncle,” Joanne shared. 37-year-old Elvin then quickly requested to not get called uncle by the little girl, to which Joanne half-laughed, half-scoffed, “Even [Zong] Zijie gets called uncle, and you still want to be called gor gor!?”
