Yesterday afternoon (Mar 5), a humble little coffee shop in a Clementi HDB estate served as the unlikely setting for the epic onscreen reunion of two local TV queens.

We are, of course, talking about Zoe Tay and Fann Wong, who have not appeared in the same drama since 2009’s The Ultimatum. Both have supporting roles in upcoming Taiwan-Singapore co-production All Is Well (Zoe as Romeo Tan’s mother and Fann as Blue Lan’s secretary), and cross paths just once in the entire 40-episode series.

To be frank, their shared scene is actually rather mundane: Fann walks up to Zoe’s chicken rice stall and orders several packets to go. That’s it. Not exactly the kind of set visit we would alter our schedules to cover, if not for the fact that two top actresses who have achieved Ah Jie status were collaborating for the first time in a decade.

“[The production team] probably thought it would be a shame for us to be in the same drama yet not have any scenes together, so they made me buy chicken rice from Zoe!” Fann chuckled during our interview with the duo.

Seeing the two of them together, we couldn’t help but to keep thinking back to Fann’s infamous remark from 20 years ago, when she declared that she and Zoe were merely colleagues and not friends. Zoe has also admitted in interviews that the frequent comparisons and media-hyped rivalry between them made things stressful and awkward.

So, fast-forward to 2019. Has the situation changed since then? “[Our relationship] has matured,” Zoe mused. “And I cherish every opportunity to work with people I don’t get to work with often.” Okay then.

From what we observed during our brief chat with Zoe and Fann, there is certainly no animosity between them (we don’t think this chicken rice scene would have existed if there were, plus, they were obviously fine with doing the interview and taking photos together, which is more than we can say for some other duos), but don’t go thinking that they’ve turned into the best of gal pals either.

In fact, Zoe shared that the last time they saw each other was during a chance encounter in celebrity hairstylist and mutual friend David Gan’s salon almost a year ago. Their respective children have also yet to meet, although they believe they’ll all get along really well with each other.

“I think Zed Zed would love Zoe’s sons because he’s very warm and enthusiastic - sometimes a little too enthusiastic!” laughed Fann, while Zoe reported that her three boys generally love playing with kids.

How have they changed over the past 10 years?

Before we let Zoe and Fann go, we asked them to share how they think the other has changed over the past 10 years. According to Zoe, Fann used to be a workaholic, but transformed into a completely different person after marrying Christopher Lee and becoming a mother.

Fann agreed with this assessment. “I never imagined that I would be able to take a break from my job to focus on my family,” she shared. “I feel very happy and blessed today.”

As for Zoe, both parties concluded that she has not changed much in the last decade. “I’m still a very strict mother! (Laughs) And I still enjoy my job,” she said, as Fann concurred, “Zoe really has not changed in the past 10 years; she’s maintained herself really well and remains everybody’s beloved Ah Jie, which I think is great.”
