DIRECT FROM PERTH: If you’ve been catching up with ongoing Channel 8 blockbuster series The Dream Job (if not, you can always do so here), you would have followed the adventures of its four main characters Jun Feng (Shaun Chen), Li Xing (Zhang Zhen Huan), Hui Shan (Jeanette Aw) and Xin Ya (Rebecca Lim) in Perth in four of its episodes, the last of which aired last night (July 28).

Back in March, Toggle had the chance to tag along for the filming of the Australia-based scenes, and we had a front row seat to watch everything that happened when the cameras weren’t rolling, as well as what happened when the cameras were rolling, but did not make it into the final cut of the show.

Click through for an exclusive look at all the shenanigans that didn’t make it to the small screen:

A special delivery from Jeanette Aw herself

In the middle of filming Shaun and Rebecca’s squeal-worthy scene with the quokkas on Rottnest Island, Jeanette surprised all of us by turning up with boxes of huge, jam-filled donuts for everyone to share - and yes, they were extremely delicious. We honestly still feel all warm and fuzzy inside remembering her sweet (literally and figuratively) gesture!

To share or not to share...

In Rebecca’s own words, this is “expectation vs. reality”: Shaun may expect Becks to share her umbrella with him, but in actual fact, she’d rather have it all to herself.

This is all just for laughs, of course - Rebecca was more than happy to help shield her co-star from the harsh Australian sunlight in the middle of the Jarrahdale forest.

While filming at the bustling street food festival, Becks was approached by quite a number of Asian folks (most likely fellow Singaporeans) who were either holidaying in Perth or based there. Besides just posing for a photo, Rebecca made an effort to chat with her fans as well to get to know a bit more about them.

When we asked Becks about having so many people recognise her, she joked that she paid them to do so, but we clearly know that’s not the case!

Driving that beautiful vintage car down the narrow path near Millbrook Winery was the easy part, but getting it out of there (the road leads to a dead end and there is a steep drop to the right of this picture) was another matter altogether. Thankfully, the driver had the help of several “traffic directors” who helped him navigate out of the tight spot, including Shaun (in the dark blue sweater).

The actors certainly had a great time meeting the various critters they came across, from fuzzy, curious quokkas on Rottnest Island to wild kangaroos at Pinnaroo Valley Memorial Park to a friendly pooch on the street.

What you saw on TV: Jun Feng and Li Xing, after failing to find a lake they were told is a must-visit, offer to walk ahead of the women to scout it out together.

The take that (obviously) didn’t make it: Zhen Huan grabbed Shaun’s hand (he didn’t resist and immediately went along with it) and they both gleefully skipped off, leaving their poor confused lady partners behind. What a plot twist...

Gearing up for a ride through paradise

Before filming their gorgeous cycling scene on picturesque Rottnest Island, Rebecca and Shaun headed to the bike shed for a “fitting” for their bicycles and helmets. Becks certainly looked eager to go as soon as she found her match!

Script study sessions ensure a smooth shoot

We saw those battered up pieces of paper almost as often as the artistes themselves. Every time before shooting for a scene commenced, the actors involved would run through the script with the director to make sure everyone was on the same page, or to discuss any possible last-minute tweaks or suggestions.

And even when there were no meetings, the actors would frequently wander off on their own to make sure they’d memorised everything. Add that to the long hours and having to make sure they get everything else right (timing, emotions etc.) - acting really is hard work!

Zhen Huan is a true gentleman on set

Awww, look who was a shining example of chivalry. As it could get pretty chilly in the middle of the Jarrahdale forest (we can attest to that fact), Jeanette’s character’s single-layered outfit clearly wasn’t enough to keep her warm, but thankfully, there was Zhen Huan to the rescue!

There’s always time for #OOTD shots

We see stars post #OOTD shots all the time, but have you ever wondered what it looks like behind the scenes of said #OOTD shot? We managed to catch Jeanette’s assistant and a crew member helping to snap the perfect “outfit of the day” photograph - complete with the usual nonchalant, staring-into-the-distance aesthetic - for Jeanette and Zhen Huan respectively.

A waiting game before or between takes

Most of the time, actors have to wait around a lot as the crew gets ready and sets up for the upcoming scene (shout out to the hardworking folks behind the scenes!). If they’re not chatting with each other or the staff, they’re more than happy to just lounge around and play with their phones or, if there’s one available like at Ballakup House, watch TV.

With some time to spare as the other artistes shoot their scenes, Becks relaxes beneath a wooden pagoda-like structure right by the breezy Fremantle seaside. After all, how often do you get to stretch in front of such a gorgeous view (and enjoy sunny outdoor weather that doesn’t reduce you into a pool of sweat)?

But first, let me take a selfie

From one-man selfies against the picturesque Perth city skyline to crowded wefies in a park populated with wild kangaroos, there were tons of great places to activate the good ol’ front-facing camera (or, in Rebecca’s case, flip up the display screen).

Zhen Huan and Shaun, the muscle men on set

No, Zhen Huan and Shaun didn’t purposely lug gym equipment all the way to a secluded forest in Australia - those weights are used to balance the camera crane, and the actors were helping to carry them deeper and deeper into the woods as filming took place in multiple spots.

While shooting at Millbrook Winery, the cast had the chance to hear about the different varieties of reds and whites produced there, before getting to sample a few glasses as well. Ah, the perks of the job...

What’s in my travel bag: Jeanette Aw

Petite Jeanette carries a backpack almost as large as her whenever she travels, and after seeing all the things that it contains, it’s no wonder why it has to be that huge. In addition to the basics like her mobile phone, wallet and camera, she also has her tablet, a whole assortment of styluses, an e-book (she used to lug five to 10 physical books around before its existence) and of course, a sketchbook and pencils.

She also revealed that she keeps some personal must-haves in the bag she uses on screen, such as lip balm, sunblock, facial mist to soothe her sensitive skin, and insect repellant because “I’m a blood bank for mosquitoes”.

Becks knows the importance of trying to maintain one’s good looks on a faraway work trip, which is why her travel bag is stocked with beauty essentials such as sunscreen, face mist, skin essence and Vitamin C. When it comes to entertainment, however, all she needs is her mobile phone.
