5 highlights from the new Star Awards theme song music video

This year’s Star Awards is a very special one: it is the 25th anniversary of local TV’s biggest event, and to mark this Silver Jubilee, a brand new theme song has been unveiled.

The tune is called ‘Starlight (星光)’ and is penned by Mandopop maestro Jim Lim, who has worked with some of the biggest names in Chinese music including A-Mei, Stefanie Sun, and Fish Leong. “To me, the Star Awards will always be about glamour, but behind that glamour lies unseen hard work, sweat and tears. That was the inspiration for my song,” shared the composer in a statement.

While Zoe Tay, Chen Han Wei, Rebecca Lim, and Desmond Tan are set to perform the track live at the Star Awards ceremony next month, we had our first listen at the Top 40 press conference last week, courtesy of SPOP SING! alumni Jarrell Ng, Marcus Tay, Karena Yeo, and Daryl-Ann Jansen. It is also their voices that are heard in a new music video for the song that was released on Toggle this morning.

The music video is a montage of past Star Awards moments that take us on one major walk down memory lane. Click through to see some of our personal favourite highlights, and watch the full clip on Toggle here.

Forget style evolution - check out the trophy evolution

Fashion trends and hairstyles ain’t the only things that have kept on changing over the years: even the shiny prize brought home by the victors has undergone quite a few makeovers, from being an enormous glass monolith (as seen with Li Nan Xing) to star-topped golden gongs of different shapes and sizes (with Fann Wong and Kym Ng) to the graceful curve that we see today (with Chen Han Wei).

So. Many. Big shots.

Tons of international celebrities have graced the Star Awards ceremonies as special guests over the years, whether to perform, present trophies, or both. Some faces we managed to catch in the video include: Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Tony Leung, A-Mei, Anthony Wong, Jay Park, Karen Mok, Sonia Sui, 5566, Nicky Wu, Jacky Wu, Matilda Tao, and many more.

P.S. Who do you hope they will invite this year?

Baldies bonding over their shaved heads

We totally do not remember what was going on between Hong Kong actor Nick Cheung and Gurmit Singh here. Are they wishing each other good luck for something? Or are they comparing the smoothness of the tops of their heads? Whatever it is, we’re still amused nonetheless.

Mr. Unbelievable crashes the party

Okay, so “crashes” may be an unfair word to use because as one of the hottest TV characters at that time (who even got his own big screen spin-off), Chen Tian Wen’s broccoli-toting alter ego was very much welcome to join in the festivities. He even has Jeanette Aw boogieing along with him!

Do y’all still remember these stars of yesteryear?

We don’t know about you, but it was nice to see several familiar faces who have already left the entertainment industry making appearances in the video, such as Bai Yan shu shu, James Lye, Xie Shao Guang (that’s him under the hat), Ng Hui, and Yuan Shuai. Who do you miss the most?
