The last time Aloysius Pang and Carrie Wong worked together (in Life - Fear Not) was also their first. Fast forward less than a year later, and they’re already sharing a bed scene - well, “floor” scene, to be precise - in their next project.

In upcoming Channel 8 drama The Gentlemen, Aloysius plays a lingerie designer, while Carrie takes on the role of an undergarment shop salesgirl who falls for him. One night, after a few too many glasses of alcohol, they end up getting intimate on the floor – complete with “aggressive kissing”.

For 22-year-old Carrie Wong, it is her very first love scene since her showbiz debut in 2014 (Aloysius’ was with Paige Chua in Channel U’s six-part series Love?, which was also a drunken one-night stand). At Tuesday’s press conference, the twosome revealed that they went ahead and filmed the scene without having a proper discussion as it felt too awkward. However, the shoot went smoothly and things were back to normal after they were done.

“We did go out for drinks after filming, but (the bed scene) was not traumatising at all,” Carrie told us, as the 25-year-old duke added, “Since it’s on TV you can’t go very far – we just kiss and roll around on the floor. [Carrie exclaimed, “Do we roll around!?”] Okay, we rolled over once.”

When we asked Carrie if she’s worried about her parents’ reaction to the scene, she replied, “I don’t think so, they’ll be very excited to watch it! (laughs) They’re very supportive parents.”

In another scene, Aloysius is seen trying women’s underwear as part of his onscreen job to understand how they work. “I tried four different kinds of bras in different colours – it was interesting because it’s something I thought I would never do in my life, so it was a fresh experience,” he shared.

He also practised hooking and unhooking bras on mannequins, and apparently got so good at it that Carrie could not help but jokingly point out his “skilfulness”. Defending himself, Aloysius said that as a lingerie designer, he should know how they work.

Aloysius was also open about looking at “a lot of bras” online and asking “a lot of weird bra questions”, such as why women bother buying lingerie with elaborate designs if they’re just going to be hidden under clothes anyway. “I couldn’t answer that question because I don’t place an importance on design,” said Carrie.

The Noontalk artiste is not the first duke to don a skimpy female garment for a role: Desmond Tan proudly sported a bikini in The Truth Seekers, but unlike the older actor, who played a private investigator, Aloysius did not see the need to work out for a hunky physique as his character in The Gentlemen is a homebody.

“It wouldn’t make sense for him to have a six-pack,” he said. When asked if he’s worried about drawing comparisons between himself and Desmond, he declared, “I’m proud of my weak bod. I think the dad bod is very popular right now, so maybe I’ll start a “teen bod” (trend)!”

Carrie, for one, approves of the look. “He’s cute,” she said with an affirmative nod.

Who was the biggest gentleman on set?

Almost everyone gave a different answer when we asked if Pierre, Han Wei or Aloysius (who play brothers in the series) are the most gentlemanly in real life: Cynthia, who said that Aloysius is “out of my league because he’s young” and that Pierre “talks too much”, named Han Wei, who plays her ex-husband in The Gentlemen. “I can complain to him and he will sayang me,” she gushed. The two last worked together in 2009’s Daddy at Home as a married couple.

Han Wei himself had trouble picking between the trio, as “all three of us have different gentlemanly traits”. “For myself, I believe in having basic respect for everyone, men or women,” he said. “It’s easy to see that Pierre is a gentleman from the way he treats women, and Aloysius always puts others first.”

Carrie didn’t even need a second to ponder the question before naming Aloysius. “I would rate him a 10 out of 10 (of gentlemanliness),” she said. “He takes good care of all the girls on set; I have nothing bad to say about him.” Aloysius attributed his good manners to his upbringing, where his mum taught him to treat women well and to take care of them.

Pierre agrees with Carrie. “From what I see, (Aloysius) presents himself very well. I remember once, he was slightly late and he came in and apologised to everyone very earnestly in a very cultured manner,” he recalled. “I would assume that Han Wei and I would just come in and be like, ‘Eh, paiseh, later I treat you all makan!’ (laughs)”

Chen Han Wei's ungentlemanly side shows when…

Horrible people who mistreat the elderly had better watch out if Han Wei is around. The 46-year-old said that seeing old folks getting disrespect brings out the ungentlemanly side of him, and even had an example from a few years back to recount to us: “An aunty in a wheelchair was rushing towards the lift I was in, but the man beside me kept pressing the ‘close’ button! I smacked his hand away and blocked the door for the aunty to come in – the man looked like he was about to pick a fight with me!”

As such, it’s no surprise that Han Wei treats his 77-year-old mother like a queen, despite his hectic schedule. For the past week, his mother, who lives in Johor, was staying with him in Singapore, and the filial son made sure to tend to her every need and want. “I would buy whatever she felt like eating, no matter how far I had to travel,” he said. He also made sure to go home for lunch with her after filming for upcoming Channel 8 drama Hero in the morning.

The 42-year-old actor would rate himself “about a seven” on a scale of one to 10 of gentlemanliness, and it’s all thanks to Mrs. Png a.k.a. Andrea De Cruz.

While most would probably name his selfless act of donating his liver to save her life in 2002 as his most chivalrous act, Pierre humbly only mentioned the everyday little things he does for her (such as pulling out and pushing in her chair, feeding her, and offering to carry her bag) as what makes him a gentleman.

But of course, he has his “ungentlemanly” moments as well. “Let’s just say it’s not always the dog that farts,” he said, cracking a smile. [Ed’s note: Pierre and Andrea are “parents” to three adorable Shih Tzus.]

Cynthia Koh had a gentlemanly encounter in Egypt

If you follow Cynthia on social media, you would have seen that she has been quite the jetsetter (in fact, she just headed to Phuket yesterday). One of the many places she recently visited was Egypt, and despite its dangerous reputation, the 42-year-old did not experience any unfortunate incidents – in fact, she had a heart-warming story to share.

“I was in Giza and wanted to go to a grocery shop across the street from my hostel,” she said. “The boy who works in the sundry shop downstairs followed me there because he told me that if you don’t speak Egyptian Arabic, (the shopkeepers) will mark up the price, so he helped me to bargain. I believe he did it from out of the goodness of his heart, without any ulterior motive.”

For those who have missed seeing Cynthia on local television, you’ll be glad to know that the actress will be taking on another Channel 8 project in November. However, she declined to reveal further details.
