In her maiden guest-of-honour appearance at the President’s Star Charity 2017, President Halimah Yacob called out for people of all walks of life to come together to give, contribute and do their best to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Putting word to action, more than 20 celebrities, various associations and performing art groups joint forces to perform entertaining song and dance acts to help raise funds on behalf of 52 beneficiaries during the two-hour-long programme yesterday.

On top of putting up performances that embodied the Singapore culture, such as the Eurasian dance performance of ‘Jinkli Nona’ and Rebecca Lim and TENG ensemble’s duet on ‘Childhood’ which was a mish-mash of Chinese lullabies and Malay folk songs, this year’s charity show was given an extra ‘local’ boost when traditional Peranakan snacks was served to guests and beneficiaries during the performance ‘Lagu Kueh Kueh.’

Last night’s show also saw 12 members from the Down Syndrome Association collaborating with Mediacorp artistes like Jayley Woo, Bonnie Loo, Joel Choo and Chen Yixi to put up an out-of-this-world dance performance of Coldplay’s ‘Something Like This,’ while Kym Ng, Jem Zhang, Renee Yadav, Katryna Tan and Mr Loke, a Care & Concern Society volunteer, tugged at heartstrings with a moving rendition of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s ‘Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence’ on the piano and harp.

One of the show’s major highlights was British singer Daniel Powter, who sang a duet ‘Save Myself’ with Sandra Riley from The Sam Willows, including his best hit ‘Bad Day.’ Saving the best for the last, veteran singer Rahimah Rahim ended the charity show on a rousing note when she took over the stage to perform a lively rendition of ‘You to Me are Everything’ for the finale act.

A total of S$7.66 million was raised through corporate donors, telepoll hotlines and online donations at this year’s President’s Star Charity show.
