Hot or Not: Star Awards 2017

PHOTOS: Lee La Na, Don Lee

If there's one thing that's as suspenseful as the actual results at Star Awards, it's the fashion. Who will dress in haute couture? Who will look like they just stepped out of a flea market? And will anyone dare to bare?

While many of tonight's attendees played it safe in black and white (to varying degrees of success), the many bared backs, plunging necklines, and occasional odd textiles kept things interesting amidst a sea of monochrome.

Check out the best and worst looks of Star Awards 2017 here!

Rui En

Rui En

Rui En looked like a true blue diva in her sophisticated Paule Ka gown, Giuseppe shoes, and Cartier jewellery. Pictures don’t do justice to how perfectly it accentuated all of her curves.

Jeanette Aw

There’s nothing like flashing a bit of leg to make a black dress – this one’s from Dsquared – more exciting.

Verdict: HOT

Carrie Wong

Carrie Wong

Carrie’s features are way too youthful for “pioneer chic”.

Verdict: NOT

Zhang Zhenhuan

Zhang Zhenhuan

Zzzz. Apparently, all the young bucks at the show tonight decided to go twinsies. You’ll see why soon.

Verdict: NOT

Desmond Tan

Desmond Tan

We could copy-paste our caption from last year’s Star Awards Hot or Not stories for this, and no one would notice. Switch it up, Desmond!

Verdict: NOT

Ian Fang

Ian Fang

Aww, we were actually looking forward to seeing Ian in one of his signature “stylo” getups. This Hugo Boss suit, while adequately handsome, is way too safe.

Verdict: NOT

Jeffrey Xu and Felicia Chin

Jeffrey Xu and Felicia Chin

Between Felicia’s hypnotic Mary Katrantzou getup and Jeffrey’s Ferragamo outfit, we’re not sure who looks kookier.

Verdict: Felicia – hot, Jeffrey, er, less so. We’ll give him credit for not wearing a black and white suit, but that doesn’t make him look any less like a retro beng.

Felicia Chin

Felicia Chin

Way to rock the Pantone Color of the Year, Felicia! Feli’s pleated Basil Soda dress is a huge improvement from the groovy getup she wore earlier that evening.

Verdict: HOT

Joanne Peh and Qi Yuwu

Joanne Peh and Qi Yuwu

Not only is Joanne glowing, but she’s downright ethereal in her made-to-measure Jessicacindy gown and Tiffany earrings, which are worth almost $370,000. She loves the dress, see-through material and all.

Verdict: HOT

Aileen Tan

17 Apr 2017

Aileen Tan

Hubba hubba: In addition to winning Best Supporting Actress, Aileen Tan also triumphed in this dazzling, low-cut evening gown from Tiara Bridal Boutique. She also wore a pair of her own 5-inch Giuseppe Zanotti heels, which she’d been saving for a special occasion.

Verdict: HOT

Bonnie Loo

Bonnie Loo

Bonnie’s red lips and marigold nails (her lucky colour) give this “leggy bride” look, from Ethereal The Label, just the right amount of quirky charm.

Verdict: HOT

Elvin Ng

Elvin Ng

Why does it seem like we’ve seen Elvin in this exact outfit at least a dozen times?

Verdict: NOT

James Seah

James Seah looks like a cartoon professor. But who doesn’t enjoy gazing at a handsome academic?

Hong Hui Fang

Zheng Geping must have suffered a tremendous nosebleed after seeing Hui Fang in her back-baring Tiara Bridal Boutique gown.

Jayley Woo

Jayley Woo

As much as we want to like this dress – it’s not black!! – we can’t help thinking it resembles the “look for less” version of the lilac Elie Saab gown Mila Kunis wore to the Oscars in 2011.

Verdict: NOT

Julie Tan

Julie Tan

This definitely looks more suited for Barbie than for Julie’s last Star Awards.

Verdict: NOT

Romeo Tan

Romeo Tan

Why do we feel like Romeo would have chosen something other than this NASCAR-inspired Dsquared overcoat if he knew he’d be on stage accepting the award for Best Supporting Actor?

Verdict: NOT

Rebecca Lim

Boring in the front, bombastic at the back – Becks’ Oscar de la Renta gown is an instant classic.

Verdict: HOT

Kate Pang

Kate Pang

Maybe we’ve rewatched Lord of the Rings one too many times, but Kate’s Jessicacindy gown could have been woven by elves. We like!

Verdict: HOT

Zoe Tay
Zoe Tay

Zoe Tay

Ah Jie wins for the fanciest outfit yet. This hot pink Schiaparelli Haute Couture jumpsuit was specially flown in from Paris, has only been worn once, and will be retired after Zoe’s done wearing it. And don’t overlook the bling bling. Those are $500,000 worth of Cartier jewels!

Verdict: HOT

Xu Bin

Xu Bin

Why yes, sir, we’d love it if you could tell us about tonight’s specials.

Verdict: NOT

Ya Hui
Ya Hui
17 Apr 2017

Ya Hui

Ya Hui walked straight out of a painting in her whimsical Couturissimo gown. The Top 10 Favourite Female Artiste award winner said that she went for a youthful look, forgoing high heels, to make this her most comfortable Star Awards outfit yet. She also skipped her meals for the day to ensure she looked good in her dress.

Verdict: HOT

Quan Yi Fong
Quan Yi Fong
17 Apr 2017

Quan Yi Fong

While hosting Unique Lodgings, Yi Fong lost 14 kilograms over a period of 8 months (dropping from 66 kg to 52 kg) – which is why she looked so svelte in her Yannick Machado gown. She said that the point of her outfit is to showcase her best features while covering her imperfections. And if you’re wondering why she looks taller, it’s because Yi Fong’s wearing a pair of 5.5-inch Jimmy Choos beneath that gown.

Verdict: HOT

Quan Yi Fong and Eleanor Lee

Quan Yi Fong and Eleanor Lee

Only after drying our eyes did we notice how cute it was that mother and daughter apparently switched wardrobes, with Yi Fong donning a youthful blue Francis Chong gown, and Eleanor opting for something more matronly.

Eleanor Lee

Despite here severe hairstyle and serious expression, Eleanor looked sweet as ever in pink, pop rock-esque sparkles.

Shane Pow

Sorry, Shane, but the eagle on your Amos Ananda suit looks like the tattoo we begged our parents to let us get when we were 16.

Kym Ng

Kym Ng

Is it just us, or is this gown an evolved version of the playful minidress she wore to Star Awards last year?

Verdict: HOT

Paige Chua

We could’ve sworn we saw something similar on Ya Hui…at any rate, Paige looks just as charming in a dress seemingly lifted from the pages of a storybook.

Lim Peifen, Sora Ma, and Seraph Sun

These three look like they’re all up for the title of Prom Queen – and we’re not about to fight them for it. Special shoutout to Sora Ma for squeezing into this shimmery Cristallini gown!
